When Should Your Child Transition To A Toddler Bed?

Your little one has spent the last couple of years sleeping in their crib. You are probably starting to wonder when is the right time to move them to a big kid’s bed, right?

Well, this is a huge milestone for both you and your little one! It means they are growing up and even bigger changes are coming. As a parent, you also have to worry about all the safety concerns that arise from having them sleep away from the protection of a crib.

So, when should your child transition to a toddler bed? Well, this guide will give you all the answers.

When Should You Make The Transition?

Moving to a toddler bed is a milestone like any other. This means that every child is different and they will be ready for it at various ages.

Some toddlers will ask to move to big kid beds as early as 18 months. Others might not be ready to move until they are 2.5 or 3 years old. Therefore, any time from 18 months to 3.5 years is considered a normal age range to move your child to a toddler bed.

That said, none of this is set in stone. It’s all up to you as the parent to decide when you and your little one are ready for the big kids bed. Don’t feel any pressure from other parents who may be transitioning their kids at earlier stages.

How To Know Your Child Is Ready For A Toddler Bed

While there may be no specific age that kids should transition to toddler beds, there are certain signs that you can look out for to help you tell whether or not your little one is ready for the big kid bed. Here are some of them:

1. They Can Climb Out Of The Crib On Their Own

This is the number one sign that it is time to ditch the crib. When your little one is big enough to make an escape even when the mattress is at the lowest position, it means that they are too big for the crib. This makes the crib a safety hazard as they can fall and hurt themselves as they escape.

2. They Are Being Potty Trained

If you are potty training your child, they don’t need the crib anymore. This is because you want them to be able to get out of bed on their own to go to the bathroom. Get a toddler bed as you potty train your little one to make their lives a little easier.

3. The Crib Is Too Small For Them

If your child can no longer fit in the crib, it is time to transition them out of it. You will know that they are too big for the crib when they can touch both ends with their hands and feet.

4. You Have Another Baby On The Way

If your child is older than 18 months and you have another child on the way, it is time to transition them to a toddler bed. It is not realistic to buy another crib when you know you’ll eventually have to move your first child to a big kid bed eventually anyway.

However, it is important to point out that you should do your best to make sure that your first child does not think they are being replaced. Start the transition process at least two months before the new baby comes so that by the time they get here, your toddler is already used to their big kids bed.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it. Now you know when your child will be ready to transition to a toddler bed. Remember to keep their routines consistent during the transition period. Encourage daytime naps in their big bed and make the transition an exciting event in their lives. Be patient and before you know it, your toddler will be having the time of their lives in their toddler bed. Good luck!
